4th - 8th September 2023

Highlights of the week:

We are all so proud of how well the children have settled into their first week of year 1! They have been learning their new class rules and routines and have all been so kind and caring to each other. We have focused on slowly settling into the big jump to year one and have been discussing the different social skills that we need to be respectful members of Otters and Rabbits.

Phonics:

The children have done brilliantly in their phonics this week, learning the qu and -er letter groups. We have been practising our reading and writing skills, making sure we have correct pencil grip, and focusing on our letter formation. These learning sheets are in your child’s phonics folder – please practise these letter groups at home.

Maths:

In maths this week we have been learning about sorting different groups. We have been using natural materials, such as pine cones, bamboo, sticks, log slices and some multilink, to sort into different groups. We have sorted into sizes, colours, shapes, and objects. We have also been focusing on our counting and number formation, making sure our numbers are facing the correct way!

Drawing Club:

Towards the end of this week, we started Drawing Club! We chose a book we all knew and loved to start off our creative sparks – Room on the Broom! The children have drawn dragons and their own swamp. We have learnt about adjectives and thinking of different vocabulary to describe our drawings. They have all turned out great and we are excited to continue with Drawing Club next week with a new book.

PSHE:

In PSHE this week we have been talking about our class rules and routines, reminding ourselves of our Jigsaw Class Charter. We have enjoyed taking turns to hold and talk with Jigsaw Jack, remembering that we respect each other when someone is talking, and that we must have our listening ears on. We have been earning Dojo points for being respectful to each other this week.

PE:

This week the children have had their PE session with our ICON coaches. We have been practising skipping, running, jumping, and other different ways of travelling.
Please make sure your child has a labelled PE bag with all clothing labelled too!

Home Learning:

● This week we would like you to recap our new phonics letter groups qu and -er that you will find in your child’s phonics folder. This will help with retaining the information we have learnt from this week at school – recapping other previous sounds are also advised to support your child’s reading.
● NumBots – Have a go at logging into NumBots via a laptop/computer, tablet, or phone. Your child will be sent home with their NumBots login, if this gets lost or broken, please let us know and we can provide you with another copy. Have a go at playing some NumBots and see if you can level up your character - this means your child’s name will be moved up to the next NumBots level in our classroom and they receive a certificate to take home for their hard work!
