18th - 22nd September 2023

Highlights of the week:

This week we have written character descriptions. We have described our characters by using ‘noun phrases’ and joining two clauses together by using the coordinating conjunction ‘and’. We practised editing our writing by reading it back to ourselves and checking the spelling of year one common exception words. We then finished teh week by publishing our writing. This is where we were able to focus on our handwriting and make sure we were forming letters correctly, using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.

In maths this week we have been using the practical resources to explore place value. We learnt how to use a place value chart with the stem sentence ‘There are ______ tens and ____ones. The number is ____.’ This stem sentence helped us understand that the position of the digits tells us the value. We then furthered our learning by partitioning 2-digit numbers into tens and ones. We started doing this practically through the use of resources. We used a part whole model and place value counters to represent the partitioning of tens and ones.

This week in Phonics we recapped some more unit 6 sounds. We looked at alternative spellings for the /ear/ sound and the alternative spellings for the /er/ sound. We enjoyed sorting the different spellings and practising our spelling routine to label pictures.

In Science we explored the school grounds and focused on the science skill of observation. We observed the different trees we have growing in the grounds and sketched what we could see. We talked about the different types of trees and if they were deciduous or evergreen. Our conversations led to discussing the different textures of trees, patterns of bark and sizes of trunks.

Geography was all about using an atlas. We explored using the Index and Contents pages to navigate our way around the books. We then used the atlas’ to draw our own maps of the world. We included the Continents and the Oceans on our maps and we remembered to use capital letters when writing the names.

Home learning:

● Please ensure you are reading with your child at home as this will support them with both their reading and writing in school.
● Please support your child to access Numbots online. It is recommended that children play Numbots for 10 minutes a day for maximum impact.
● Your child will arrive home with their Phonics folders. Please support your child with recapping their learning to ensure a secure understanding.

Our PE days are Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school so that they can participate. If your child wears earrings please could they be removed or taped up before school. Thank you. See you next week!
