2nd - 6th October 2023

Highlights of the week:

In English this week we have continued to look at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The children are now in the ‘Capture, Sift and Sort’ phase of their learning journey where they learn about the important grammar and punctuation features needed for a character description.

We have been looking at pronouns, similes and possessive apostrophes. Here is an example of an ‘explain, change, create’ activity that the children completed to demonstrate their understanding of possessive apostrophes.

In maths this week, we have been finishing our unit on Place Value to 10,000. This week, we have looked at rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. They used number lines and their knowledge of place value to describe which multiple the number was closest to. The children have been working very hard on their use of ‘Stem Sentences’ which is where they are encouraged to explain their learning in full sentences to secure a ‘mastery’ level of understanding.

In History the children have been preparing for our parent workshop next Monday by presenting their learning beautifully for display! The children have created Roman shields, researched facts about Hadrian’s Wall and put everything they know about the Roman army onto large posters. They are very excited to show you all of their fantastic work!

In art the children have been learning about different painting techniques. We have focused on watercolour and they have learnt how to create different effects depending on how much water and what type of brush stroke they use. They have also looked again at the colour wheel and explored different ways of mixing their desired colours.
