4th - 8th September 2023

Highlights of the week:

We have been so proud of how the children have started their first week in Year 4. They have coped well with the new level of challenge and shown great enthusiasm for learning.

In English this week, the children have been working towards writing a diary entry which they will complete by the end of next week. They have watched the clip ‘The Wishgranter’ and attempted to put themselves into the shoes of the main character. After sequencing the clip and orally retelling the story from his point of view, the children have worked hard to generate interesting vocabulary to describe how he is feeling throughout the story.

In maths we are currently working our way through a place value unit. This week, we have recapped some of the important learning from Year 3 that they will be able to use to help them in Year 4. For example, the children have been representing numbers to 1,000, partitioning numbers to 1,000 and estimating on a number line. Next week we will begin looking at the place value of numbers to 10,000.

Year 4 maths

In history this week the children were very excited to begin their learning all about The Romans. We started by looking at how the Roman Empire began and the children learnt all about the story of Romulus and Remus.

In Science we introduced our new enquiry question of ‘What do our bodies do with the food we eat?’ where we will be learning all about teeth, the digestive system and food chains. This week the children recapped their previous learning around these topics showing us what they already knew, before generating questions about what they would like to find out.

In art we have been looking at a variety of shading techniques and how we can make objects we sketch look 3D. The children experimented with shading pencils and explored a range of techniques such as blending, cross hatching and shading on a curve to help them achieve a 3D looking image. Their sketchbooks are looking brilliant and we are already looking forward to next week’s art lesson!
